EASTABOGA, AL - October 8, 2016 –
Derek Hagar of Marion, AR took his seventh win of the 2016 20thAnniversary
United Sprint Car Series Outlaw Thunder Tour Presented by K&N Filters on
Saturday night at Talladega Short Track. Hagar battled side-by-side with
Marshall Skinner of Marion, AR early in the caution-free 30 lap race, but he
took the lead for good on lap six, and drove to the checkered flag
unchallenged.
“We almost didn’t have enough gear
in the car, as it was bogging down a little bit in the middle of the corners
while I was racing Skinner for the lead,” Hagar said. “But once I got out
front, I could search around and find the rubber. We were good in clean
air and put 30 solid laps together to get the win.”
Skinner finished second and the
defending USCS National Champion Morgan Turpen of Cordova, TN took
the third spot. USCS National point leader and 11-time USCS National
Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN was fourth, and fifth-place went to Jeff
Willingham of Ripley, MS. Eric Riggins Jr. of Charlotte, NC finished
sixth and Lance Moss of Cherryville, NC took the seventh spot. Gray now
has a scant eight-point lead over his teammate Turpen in theUSCS National
point standings.
Brian Thomas of Pendergrass, GA came
home in the eighth spot, and current USC Outlaw Thunder Tour Rookie
of the Year points leader Danny Sams Jr. of Englewood, FL was ninth. Lee
Moore of Tuscaloosa, AL rounded out the top ten. Turpen, Sams and Jake
Knight of Georgetown, MS, who was making his first run in a winged outlaw
sprint car, shared the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger Award.
In preliminary action, because it was
a duel region points event two Hoosier Tire Speed Dashes were contested.
the six-lap USCS Mid-South Region Hoosier Tire Speed Dash was
won by Derek Hagar, and the six-lapUSCS Southern Region Hoosier Tire Speed
Dash was won by Terry Gray. In eight-lap Heat Race action, the Engler
Machine and Tool First Heat was won by Skinner, and Hagar won the Brown
and Miller Racing Solutions Second Heat.
Hagar also earned the K&N
Filters Pole Award, but it was Skinner taking the lead at the start of the
30-lap main event followed by Hagar, Willingham, Turpen and Gray. Hager
stayed right with Skinner in the opening laps and raced the veteran
side-by-side for the first three laps of the race.
On lap four, Hagar just edged
Skinner at the line to lead that lap, and on lap five, it was Skinner on the
outside with the momentum off turn four to lead that tour by a half
car-length. Hagar took the lead for good on lap six, and began to open up
a lead on Skinner. The only thing that could slow Hagar down was lapped
traffic, but it wasn’t enough for Skinner to make a challenge for the lead.
The USCS portion of the
event was dedicated to Brian Ogle of Sylacauga, AL. Brian Ogle is a high school
student who was severely beaten nearly to death in an brutal attack by a gang
of thugs after his high school’s homecoming football game on September 30,
2016, Ogle was attacked after posting on social media supporting Law
Enforcement. Over $1200 was raised at Talladega Short Track on Saturday night
from many small donation supporters to help Brian and his Family with his
recovery. He still remained hospitalized at the time of the event after one
week.
