uscsowmwilbanks3.3.17small.jpg

HATTIESBURG, MS – March 3, 2017 – Young gun Hunter Wilbanks of Lakeland, TN opened his 2017 United Speed Contest Sanction season with a career-first win in the K&N Filters USCS Outlaw Modified Series on Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway. Wilbanks took the lead on lap seven from Robert Casada of Hattiesburg, MS, then led the rest of the way in the 25-lap main event for his first ever USCS and open wheel modified victory to park his #10w in the www.rockauto.com USCS Victory Lane.

Noah Daspit of Kiln, MS finished in second and Casada ended up third.  Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS started on the tail of the field twice and raced to a fourth-place finish.  Fifth went to Nicholas Seiller of Pass Christian, MS and Tommy Beasley of Hattiesburg finished sixth.  Craig Vaughn from Ollive Branch, MS drove to a seventh-place finish, and McGee, Mississippi’s Bryan Powell was eighth.  Bill Taylor from Shubuta, MS took the ninth spot, and Chad Shivers of Prentiss, MS finished tenth.

Wilbanks made it a clean-sweep of the USCS Outlaw Modified Series season opener with his main event win after also picking up the win in the first six-lap Heat Race.  Robert Casada was the winner in the second six-lap heat race.

Casada took the lead from the K&N Filters Pole Position at the start of the race followed by Wilbanks, Daspit, Vaughn, and Taylor.  Wing was in a hurry, as he charged from the 11th starting spot to fifth on lap three.  Wing passed Vaughn for the fourth spot on lap four.  Wilbanks took the lead on lap seven when he passed Casada for the point.

Wing’s charge to the front of the pack suffered a setback on lap 11 when he spun in turn four to bring out the first caution flag of the race. Wilbanks led Casada, Daspit, Vaughn, Taylor, Seiler, Beasley, Powell and Wing down for the restart.  Daspit got by Casada on the restart to take over the second spot.

Vaughn and Powell tangled on lap 19 in turn two and lit the yellow caution bulb up for the second time in the race.  Wilbanks had Daspit, Casada, Sellier, Beasley, Powell, Wing, Vaughn and Powell behind him for the six-lap dash to the finish.  Wing went from seventh to fifth on the restart, and passed Seiler for fourth on lap 22.

Wilbanks stayed out front in the K&N Filters USCS Modified Series feature run to the checkered flag to take the win in the 2017 USCS Modified season opener.  The K&N Filters USCS Modified Series will now head to the Black Ice of Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS for Round 2 of the 2017 racing season.

Rodney Wing collected the Comp Cams Hard Charger Award after starting in last place and finishing fourth in the final running order.
