MARYVILLE, TN - April 29, 2017 - The defending and two-time United Sprint Car Series National Champion Morgan Turpen of Cordova, TN showed East Tennessee race fans why she’s earned the title of “Queen of the Wings” as she posted a wire-to-wire win on Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway.  It was the fourth straight USCS win for Turpen and her second victory in as many nights.

Turpen also picked up the win on Friday night at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, FL for the USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters.  In both races, the 2013 USCS National Champion Derek Hagar of Marion, AR made late race charges, but came up short each time.  For the 2nd straight night, Hagar had to settle for 2nd on Saturday.

Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK brought his winged Outlaw Sprint Car from the 11th starting spot to finish third and earn the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger of the Race Award.  K&N Filters Pole Award Winner and 2011 USCS Rookie of the Year, Jordan Mallett of Greenbrier, AR was fourth, and former USCS Champion Marshall Skinner of Marion, AR took the fifth spotYoung gun Howard Moore of Memphis, TN led the next group with a sixth-place finish, and rookie contender Joey Schmidt of Ellisville, MS finished seventh.  The 11-time USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN took the eighth spot, and Lance Moss of Cherryville, NC was ninth.  Zach Daum from Pocahontas, IL rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, Daum won the six-lap Hoosier Tire Speed Dash.  Skinner won the eight-lap Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race, and Moss won the Brown and Miller Racing Solutions Second eight-lap Heat Race.

Turpen took the lead from her outside front row starting spot at the drop of the green flag to start the race followed by Mallett, Moore, Hagar, and Skinner.  The only caution flag of the race came out on lap two when Tony Agin of Fort Myers, FL and Curt Terrell of Bartlett, TN tangled in turn two.  They also collected the car of Aubrey Black of Trenton, GA.

Hagar got around Moore on the restart to move up to the third spot on the restart and while he chased down Mallett in the second spot, Turpen had pulled out to a half straightaway lead by the completion of the fifth lap.  Turpen reached the cars on the tail of the lead lap by the ninth circuit, and Hagar got by Mallett for second on the 9th lap.

Hagar just couldn’t seem to gain any ground on the leader, as Turpen held a full straightaway lead on the second-place machine.  With ten laps to go, Turpen was in heavy lapped traffic with Hagar in second, Mallett in third, Skinner in fourth, Moore in fifth, and Covington had climbed up to the sixth spot running the very top of the race track.

In the closing laps of the race, Hagar also put his racer on the top shelf, and the momentum began to get him closer to Turpen.  Turpen was up to the challenge, sticking to the bottom to middle of the track, and take the checkered flag with just a little over a full second margin of victory over Hagar.

In USCS 600 Mini Sprint action on Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway, Bobby Zaiontz of Columbus, MS drove to his second straight win in the 15-lap main event.  Zaiontz started off the weekend with a win on Saturday night at I-75 Raceway.  On Saturday night, Zaiontz was trailed to the checkered flag by 13-year-old 2016 series Rookie of the Year, Conner Morrell of Palmetto, FL.

Tommy Thompson of Ten Mile, TN took the third spot, and fourth went to Jim McNulty of Navarre, FL.  Gregg Jones of Navarre, FL rounded out the top five.  In preliminary action, Brandon Taylor of Cumming, GA won the Hoosier Tire Speed Dash, and the Engler Machine and Tool Heat Race was won by Jones.

The next event on the 2017 USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters will be the USCS “Saturday of Speed” on Saturday night, May 6 at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA.
