Mark Smith charges to Winter Heat Series Round #5 win Southern Raceway on Saturday

Mark Smith charges to Winter Heat Series Round #5 win Southern Raceway on Saturday

Milton, Florida – February 29, 2020 – Mark Smith from Sunbury, Pennsylvania’s charged past early race-leader Danny Smith from Chillicothe. Ohio on lap three of the 30-lap United Sprint Car Series Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters main event at Southern Raceway on Saturday night to make his fifth trip of the 2020 season to the www.RockAuto.com USCS Victory Lane in USCS series competition.

The win, which was the USCS Winter Heat mini-series Round #5, kept Smith squarely atop the USCS National and Winter Heat 2020 season point standings going into Rounds #6 and #7 on Friday and Saturday, March 6th and 7th at Chatham Speedway in Chatham, Louisiana.

Mark Smith started sixth in the 22-car field for the evening finale over the Southern Raceway 1/3-mile oval. On lap one he improved to third place. On the following lap (2) he moved in behind the early race-leader, the Sprint Car Hall of Fame driver Danny Smith with his team-mate Dale Howard from Byhalia, Mississippi behind him in third place. On lap three Mark Smith raced past Danny Smith into the lead and never looked back leaving the balance of the field to fight for the runner-up spot.

During the first 27 caution-free laps of the 30-lap speed contest, Smith raced through lapped traffic like the dirt-demon he has become while Dale Howard worked on Danny Smith for second position. Finally, on lap eight, Dale Howard raced past the legendary veteran driver while Danny Smith held off the evening’s USCS Hoosier Dash winner and past NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Tony Stewart from Columbus, Indiana. It took two more Laps before Stewart could wrestle the final podium spot from Danny Smith and race into third place to challenge Dale Howard for the runner-up spot.

On lap seventeen, Stewart finally passed Dale Howard to take up the chase for Mark Smith. On lap twenty-seven, Stewart got his one final shot at passing the Pennsylvania driver after Matthews, Alabama driver Kyle Amerson got contacted by another car and came to a rest on the track unable to continue, bringing out the race’s only caution.

After the restart, Mark Smith charged out to a six car length lead over the 2020 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee (Stewart) to race under the checkered flag with Stewart, Dale Howard, the previous evening’s runner-up Danny Martin, Jr, from Sarasota, Florida and Danny Smith completing the top five drivers.

Greg Wilson from Benton Ridge, Ohio advanced eight places after a fourteenth place start to finish sixth at the checkered flag. Rookie Conner Leoffler from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina followed in seventh place, Two-time USCS National Champion, Morgan Turpen from Cordova, Tennessee also passed eight cars to finish eighth, Jim Shuster from Newville, Pennsylvania was ninth and defending USCS National Champion, Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee completed the top ten.

Tony Stewart kicked off the evening action with a popular win in the 6-lap USCS Hoosier Speed Dash. Dale Howard won the Engler Machine and Tool Heat One, Dale Howard won the Brown and Miller Racing Solutions Second Heat and Veteran Danny Smith won the Butlerbuilt Third Heat. Greg Wilson advanced eight positions in the main event after starting fourteenth and finishing in sixth place to garner the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger Award. Veteran Ohio racer, Danny Smith started from the K&N Filters Pole Position to collect the K&N Filters Pole Award.

The next USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour events will be next weekend for the USCS Winter Heat Series Rounds #6 and #7 at Chatham Speedway in Chatham, Louisiana on Friday and Saturday, March 6th and 7th.
