O'Reilly USCS "ASPHALT THUNDER" SPRINT CARS HEADLINE FIVE FLAGS SPEEDWAY RACING FRIDAY
Pensacola, FL - Wild and exciting winged Outlaw sprint car racing returns to the home of the Snowball Derby, Five Flags Speedway this Friday night, March 30th as part of the speedway's "Open Wheel Mania". The O'Reilly Auto Parts sponsored United Sprint Car Series "Asphalt Thunder" Tour will roar into the famed 1/2 mile paved oval for round one of the three-race Gulf Coast Challenge 2007 mini series. This will be event number four on the season for the O'Reilly USCS National touring drivers who also race on dirt ovals. The series moves over to Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night, March 31st and concludes the three-race Gulf Coast swing at Southern Raceway on their dirt 1/3 mile oval with round three the following weekend. If one driver wins both the Five Flags and Mobile events they will start dead last in the A-Main at Southern Raceway on April 7th and can pocket $10,000 for the win at Southern Raceway. If two different drivers win at the two paved half-mile ovals then they will both be eligible to start in the rear of the third round event and race for $7500 to win.
The O'Reilly USCS is the only winged Outlaw sprint car series in the World that races on both dirt and paved surfaces. The event is expected to bring top winged Outlaw sprint car drivers from at least six states to the Speedway. Their exotic fire breathing, alcohol burning, 700 horsepower open wheel cars weight just 1,300 pounds and will literally fly around the track surface at speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. It is not uncommon to see O'Reilly USCS sprint cars popping "wheelies" or doing wheel stands because of the brute force of their engines and their huge 18-inch wide rear tires.
Friday night's Outlaw sprint car action will feature a full program of sprint car racing that will include test and tune hot laps, time trials, qualifying heat races and an A-main event. The evening's first sprint car race will be the Lucas Oil Power Dash that showcases the top cars from the previous O'Reilly USCS main event in an edge-of-your-seat six-car, six lap shootout. Also on the racing program will be the Open Wheel Modifieds. The Modifieds are one of the Speedway's most popular racing divisions during the annual Snowball Derby. Additionally on tap is a full program of exciting and high-speed motorcycle racing around the high-banked half mile.
Heavy hitter O'Reilly USCS winged outlaw sprint car entries include a number of the nation's top ranked winged sprint car drivers including three of the Nation's best. Those are Kenny Adams of Malabar, Florida, Terry Gray of Bartlett, Tennessee and 20 year-old Young Gun Danny Martin, Jr. from Sarasota, Florida. Adams is a two-time series National champion and was the 2005 O'Reilly USCS champion. The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame pollsters also named Adams 2000's National Sprint Car Driver of the Year. Adams is the series all-time leading career feature winner with ninety-nine (99) O'Reilly USCS feature wins. His last win last came in the series Asphalt Thunder season opener at Peach State Speedway on March 17th. This great driver has Five Flags Speedway in his plans to win his milestone 100th career O'Reilly USCS feature win. No other driver has reached that mark in the series.
Adams has also been one of the Winn ingest sprint car drivers in the country over the past six seasons. "The Malabar Missile" has over 135 wins overall since the beginning of the 2000 season including the 2005 and 2006 season openers at Five Flags. He finished second in the 2005 NSCHOF Driver of the Year poll and fifteenth last season after running less than a full O'Reilly USCS schedule. In somewhat of an off year Adams scored just four O'Reilly USCS feature wins last season, but he has already won twice in 2007 in four National events he has competed in and leads the current National point standings.
Adams will have his hands full with a host of challengers from across the nation including the five-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Terry Gray and the 20 year-old Martin who was the 2004, 2005 and 2006 runner-up in the O'Reilly USCS National point standings. Martin is also familiar with victory lane at Five Flags Speedway as he won the Fall 2005 O'Reilly USCS feature at the Speedway.
Terry Gray is the current National points leader and has twelve national sprint car championships with three different series to his credit and over 300 feature wins. Gray finished in the number three spot at the end of last season in the final National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Driver of the Year poll. He is also among the top 25 win leaders in the nation over the last four seasons with over 65 main event wins. Danny Martin finished last season ranked eighth in the Nation out of 3000 drivers considered after winning 8 times in O'Reilly USCS competition and he finished the season in strong fashion with 5 wins in a row in September.
Another top Hoosier Tire Young Gun entered is twenty-one year-old Tom "TJ" Winegardner, Jr from Pierson, Florida who finished in third place in the 2006 National title chase standings. Winegardner is currently tied with defending champion Terry Gray for second place in the 2007 National standings behind Adams. Another potent Young Gun entry is twenty year-old Ryan Myers from Eaton, Ohio who finished third in the 2006 O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder standings. Myers will be joined by several other talented USCS Young Guns (drivers under 25 drivers) from the 2006 Asphalt Thunder top ten including 2005 O'Reilly USCS Rookie of the Year, twenty-year old Bryn Gohn from Malabar, Florida. Gohn finished in eighth place in the 2006 National point standings. Additionally seventeen-year-old teen driving sensation, Matt Tiffany from Daytona Beach, Florida who finished 6th in the 2006 National standings and captured a paved track win in his rookie season 2005 and again in 2006 is entered and a threat to win anytime. Another pair of young challengers from the Buckeye State of Ohio will join these young speed-demons. Those include Myers' teammate Chad Livingston and Jon Kettlewell.
The youngest Young Gun of all will be fourteen year-old Trey Robb from Newcastle, Oklahoma who is in his third season racing the 700 Horsepower winged beasts. The slightly built Robb already has a feature win to his credit and is truly a talent to be followed. He finished in third place behind Kenny Adams and Terry Gray in his paved track debut at Peach State Speedway on March 17, 2007. Peach State Speedway is very similar in size and speed to Five Flags Speedway
Veteran O'Reilly USCS sprint car driver Doug Day from Winder, Georgia who was the runner-up in the 2002 title chase and has numerous top five performances on the asphalt is an expected entry. Day set fast time at the Peach State season opener. Also entered are Dan Statter from Deltona, Florida who finished in ninth place in the 2006 O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder standings and "Chargin' Charlie Ladner from Tampa, Florida who was tenth in the same standings last season.
